How The Move is Run

Maybe you regularly come to and love The Move but aren’t clear about who we are. Or maybe you are brand new and curious to find out more.

The Move is a member-based non-profit organization run by a group of amazing and passionate individuals. Our intention is to be open and accessible to the entire community. Please do get in touch with us – either by speaking to a facilitator who is working, sending us an email, or finding us on the floor. Generally, the Stewards are your main contact for Move related questions and concerns.

Stewards

As the management team of The Move Dance Collective, Stewards are responsible for the day-to-day decisions and coordination of The Move, including working with Move consultants and the direction and planning of all facilitator-related items, creating the organisational budget and handling of day-to-day accounting, outreach within the community and overseeing special projects, and for all the administrative aspects of The Move. Additionally Stewards participate in the orientation of the board, plan the general and visioning meetings and propose agendas for board meetings.

  • Stewards act as the main point of communication for community members, facilitators and board members and are the main “go to” people for Move related questions and concerns. Stewards work together and are continually balancing the needs of many individuals as well as the broader community in all their decision making. They are also continually guided by the principles of fostering more connection between individuals and within the community, growing as a community and as individuals, and embodying The Move’s dancefloor values of diversity, non-judgment, mindfulness, and awareness of our impact on the whole.

Our Stewards are:
Frank Norquay

Move Advisory Council (MAC)

The MAC is The Move Collective’s community Board of Directors. The MAC members are voted in at our Annual General Meeting by members of the Collective and are entrusted to make decisions on The Move’s behalf. The MAC’s main responsibility is to ensure the organisation’s wellbeing through budgetary approval and larger visioning for The Move.

The work of the MAC is guided by a commitment to personal growth and fostering interpersonal relationships, within the council, the Stewards,  the facilitator team and the broader community. The MAC upholds a commitment to ensuring that the voices of the stewards, facilitators and community are considered in all decisions. They are responsible for making larger decisions that impact the structure or culture of The Move.

Our current MAC members are:
Wendy Sinclair
James Essex
Robin Elliot
Stefan Alexander

Facilitators

Our facilitators are a group of individuals who care deeply about The Move and who hold the space each week for you to come and dance. They are the first point of contact for any concerns related to physical or emotional safety at The Move. For example, if the space is too hot, the music is too loud, you have hurt yourself physically, or you feel unsafe emotionally, they are there to provide support and help you meet your needs. There are two facilitators working for the duration of each Move.

Our facilitators and DJs are paid staff who regularly attend facilitator meetings, engage with the Stewards, and who have been part of the development and training of safety protocols, including training in CPR.

Our super Facilitators are:
Frank Norquay
Elisa Hollenberg

Stefan Alexander
Michael Haltrecht
René Ng

Our excellent DJs are:
Twyla Kowalenko
Ariel Llama
Valerie Moysey

F-erenc Szabo
Michael Penarubia

Door Fairies

Our Door Fairies are part of our Energy Exchange program. In exchange for handing out numbered cards and greeting people at the door, they receive one free entry to The Move. The position runs for 6 months and then we open the position up to new members. Once they have finished greeting people, they shed their wings and become dancers for the rest of evening. If you have any questions or concerns while at The Move, please speak with one of our facilitators.
